It’s operated by the US Park Service Barstow & the Central Mojave n 49 to inform tourists about Death Valley and the Mojave National Preserve. Baker is the northern entrance to the Preserve, but is probably better known as the southern entrance to Death Valley. Northward out of Baker a two-lane (paved) highway follows Salt Creek to the Amargosa River, then on to the towns of Shoshone and Tecopa, then into Death Valley National Park. It’s a beautiful drive, for a paved road. Silurian Lake, a typical Mojave playa, parallels the road.
