Here’s a descriptive list of common names for today’s popular candle styles, which fall into five descriptive categories: Candles by Substance These candles are labeled according to the main composition of the candle mass: Beaded/Wax Sand Candles: Containers of small beads of wax or sandlike granules of wax are considered candles, although it is not necessary to melt and pour the wax into the container. Candlemaking of this type is popular as it only requires filling a container with a positioned wick; heat and melting the wax are not involved in the process.

Candle Wicking There are five types of wicking specifically designed for candlemaking—flat braid, square braid, zinc core (metal core wick for containers), paper core (paper core wick for containers), and cotton core (natural core wick for containers). Each comes in different plies (“ply” specifies the number of threads) of small, medium, large, and extra large, but the sizes may vary by manufacturer. Wicks can also be bought primed (predipped in wax) or unprimed. A primed wick improves the burning quality of the wick and prevents air bubbles from sticking to it during pouring.

Avoid waxes that are discolored, look really bubbly, or feel oily, even if they are really inexpensive. These scale waxes are not refined enough for candlemaking, and will not produce quality candles. Did you know??? , King Alfred of England invented the “Lanthorn,” a candle enclosed by four sections of transparent horn. He is also credited with the invention of the candle clock, which measured time and burned for 4 hours. Wax Additives How do you want your candle to look and burn? Additives can give a candle a particular appearance (such as making it glow) and improve its burning qualities, as well as help you in the candlemaking process.
