Other collaborators or associates came and went on various regular and irregular bases. We know that a certain Marco (probably Marco d’Oggiono) was working on Leonardo’s premises in 1490, from a record that also tells how Salaì had characteristically stolen a silverpoint drawing ‘pencil’ from Boltraffio’s room. Boltraffio was a gentleman painter who worked closely on polished paintings compiled from Leonardo’s motifs and compositions, including the Madonna Litta in St Petersburg. Leonardo’s notebooks contain fragmentary records of other workers about whom we know little or nothing.

However, these accounts do give an important sense of the kinds of business Leonardo was conducting and indicate clearly that at 38 a strange career least some of his designs were realized by technicians in his employ. This documentation stands in marked contradiction to the popular perception of Leonardo as perpetually unproductive. In 1493 Leonardo records that a certain ‘Maestro Tommaso came back and worked on his own account’. Giulio Tedesco (presumably a German technician) had four months’ pay, while nine months’ pay was recorded for Tommaso, who ‘made 6 candlesticks which took 10 days’.

The best for which I can hope is that Leonardo himself would have recognized something in the perspective I have adopted here. 9 A STRANGE CAREER aturday, 15 april 1452. m. Renaissance time in the Tuscan hill town of Vinci, Leonardo was born out of wedlock. As his grandfather recorded, he was the illegitimate son of the otherwise unknown Caterina and Ser Piero da Vinci, who was to become a prominent lawyer in Florence. In 1469 Ser Piero received an official government appointment as notary to the chief law-enforcement officer.
