Although I began my involvement with making books by purchasing plain blank books that could be personalized, I now prefer to make my own. It allows me to choose the size, paper (or other surface), binding style and cover material that will work together to enhance the concepts presented by the images and words—concepts chosen from subject matter ranging from the personal to the political, the sacred to the mundane. In Book + Art, we’ll be referring to the individual parts of a book—covers, endpapers, book block and so on.
We’ll begin by exploring surfaces that you can use for pages and for covers, including synthetics and unusual options. Then we’ll consider ways of working with images and words, and look at how the components work together. Nag Hammadi, 2006, 72 pages 5” × 3½” (13cm × 9cm) Nag Hammadi is a single quire made of sheets of mud papyrus. The brown leather cover is attached to a single signature with two black leather tackets. A tie of the same brown leather is attached to the cover with three visible stitches of black leather and a tail left hanging.
Some papers, films and fabrics made of synthetic materials are dimensionally stable (they won’t buckle, swell or shrink). Although they are very different in texture and weight, Strathmore Aquarius II watercolor paper, Sheer Heaven, Yupo, Dura-Lar and nonwoven fabrics made with spunbonded polyester, polyethylene and polypropylenethe are all dimensionally stable synthetic products. Leather, vellum, cloth, acetate, Plexiglas, metal, metal foils, wood, wood veneer, glass, aluminum, clay and polymer clay are possible materials that can be used in making pages and book covers.
