Throughout his life, he attempted to hedge on the doctrine of justification by works. The Presbyterian theology was probably a bit too fatalistic for him. As for the Methodists, they were embroiled indecorously during the early 1800s in internecine battles. The Bethel faction, founded in Philadelphia in 1816, was constantly viewed as a rival of the Zion faction, founded in New York in 1810.

He put great stress on free will and on the participation of the Christian in his own salvation. 93 It was later reported that while he was in New Haven Crummell led the black members out of Trinity parish to form their own congregation, which was called St. Luke's. He received a specific license from his mentor, Rev. Harry Croswell, and was assigned a room, which belonged to Trinity Parish, as a meeting place. The first treasurer of St. Luke's was Alexander Du Bois, the grandfather of W. E. B.

The advice was given on July 12, 1834, and complied with two days later. No doubt the rioting against the abolitionists in New York that week had much to do with both Onderdonk's advice and Williams's compliance.
